What is the $5,000 rule for HVAC?
Multiply the age of the system in years by the repair quote. Under $5,000, repairing usually makes sense. Over it, the money is usually better put toward replacement. A 12-year-old system with a $250 repair is a repair; a 10-year-old system with a $1,800 compressor is a conversation we have with the numbers written down, and both of those are illustrations rather than our prices. With repairs running $150 to $4,500 and a new system $8,500 to $20,000 installed, the sum usually settles it in about a minute. It is a rule of thumb, not a law, and we say when it does not apply.
