What moves the number, up or down

What is the $5,000 rule for AC?
It is a rule of thumb, not a law. Multiply the age of the system in years by the cost of the proposed repair. If the answer comes out above 5,000 the rule says lean toward replacement, and below it says repair. It is useful for the middle cases and useless at the edges: a cheap fix on an old unit still passes, and an expensive repair on a nearly new system under warranty still fails.
