Sounds like your AC?

Six ways an East Dallas AC tells you it needs help

Most of these are a same-day* repair when they are caught early. Left for a week in July, a $200 part becomes a compressor.

Running all day, never below 78.

Usually low refrigerant, a dirty outdoor coil, or a failing capacitor that is starving the compressor. A quick pressure and amp check tells us which.

Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil.

Airflow or charge. Turn the system off and let it thaw before we arrive, or the repair waits an hour while it does.

The breaker trips when the outdoor unit starts.

A hard-starting compressor, a shorted fan motor, or a weak capacitor. Stop resetting it; each trip is a hit on the compressor windings.

Upstairs will not drop below 80.

Heat rises and one system fights it all afternoon. Sometimes a damper or a return, sometimes zoning, sometimes a tired unit. We tell you which before quoting anything.

Water around the indoor unit or a ceiling stain below the attic.

A clogged condensate drain. Common in East Dallas attics in August. We clear it, treat it, and check the safety switch that should have shut the system off.

Short cycling: on for two minutes, off, on again.

Oversizing, a dirty filter, a refrigerant problem, or a control fault. The fix ranges from a filter to a board, which is why we diagnose before we quote.

What we check first

How an East Dallas AC repair call goes

01

You describe it, Mario listens

On weekdays the call goes straight to the owner. Tell him what the system is doing and he can usually say whether it sounds like a one-visit fix before anyone drives over.

02

Electrical and airflow first

Capacitor, contactor, motor amps, filter and coil condition. Most East Dallas no-cool calls are found in the first fifteen minutes, right here.

03

Refrigerant pressures and leak check

If the charge is low we find out why before adding a pound. Topping off a leaking system every summer is a bad deal for you, so we say so.

04

Price before work, then the repair

You get the fault, the fix and the number before we touch a wrench. Common parts are on the van, so most repairs finish in the same visit.

Repair or replace

When we tell an East Dallas homeowner to stop repairing

We fix systems for a living, so we are not quick to sell you a new one. But there is a point where repair money is wasted, and we will tell you when you have reached it.

Repair is the smart money when

  • The system is under about 10 years old and the fault is a single part
  • The compressor tests healthy and the coil is not leaking
  • The repair costs less than about a third of a comparable new system
  • The rest of the system was maintained and the ductwork is sound

Replacement wins when

  • It is a 15-plus year old system on refrigerant that is expensive to top off
  • The compressor or evaporator coil has failed
  • Repair bills are heading toward half the cost of a new system
  • The house has been added onto and the system was never sized for it
