How does the $5,000 rule work on a real quote?
Multiply the age of the system in years by the repair quote, then compare the answer with $5,000. Take three illustrations. A 12-year-old system with a $250 capacitor and contactor repair comes to $3,000, comfortably under, so you repair it. The same system with a $900 compressor-related repair comes to $10,800, well over, so the money belongs in a replacement. A 6-year-old system with a $700 repair comes to $4,200 and stays a repair.
